Posts: 406 5-Jan-2009 12:09:50	Tags : None 1- sandflies & midges. Eat me alive when I go fishing, and jeez I react badly- to the point where I take anti-histamines, which then knocks me out for the best part of twelve hours. 2- my new, chain-smoking neighbours that live downstairs. From about 6.30 in the morning to eleven at night, they're puffing away- and that foul smell comes in every window. Loungeroom, balcony, bedroom, computer room, kitchen- there's no escape. 3- toadfish. I can't catch anything else these days. Anyway, just thought I'd share.

I had one similar to the first happen while riding, and the end result was something a little bit larger than a golf ball size dent in the passenger door of the idiot's car. Amazing what the cleat on a bike shoe can do to a shitbox excel. Was very therapeutic, can almost make me rethink whether there's benefits to road rage. I used to commute by bike, so encountered more than my fair share of idiot drivers. I reckon everyone should be forced to pedal on the road for 6 months before getting a licence. Help em get fit, and does amazing things for raising your awareness when you do get behind the wheel. Was riding one morning, and had one driver not bother with anything as simple as giving way to other traffic, i.e. me, when he was supposed to. I took evasive action, dropped the bike without running into any traffic or any roadside furniture, which is always a good thing. Jumped back on, caught up to him at traffic lights down the road a bit, and knocked on his window, whereupon we had a full and frank exchange of views. When he suggested that he had no reason to give way, because if we collided, it wouldn't be him or his car getting damaged, I (or at least my foot) proved him wrong by colliding with his car at high speed, and disappearing off into the side streets/bike paths while he remained stuck at the light. Kangaroos were known to annoy me while riding home too. Once I got off the road and on to the bike paths I went through some bush and around the back of the AIS. Plenty of skippys around, and the silly bastards would occasionally be sitting on the path and staring mesmerised at my lights. Frightened the shit out of me a couple of times.

They're all in a shocking state of repair, whenever there's rain, new potholes appear which take weeks if not longer to be filled in. The city design is atrocious, so all it takes is one accident pretty much anywhere in the city during peak hour for gridlock. And the roadworkers: once, they were repairing a level crossing, and took away most of the asphalt next to the train lines, and left it like that for weeks- about six inches of rail exposed. First time I drove over it, I didn't realise, and bang- bye bye suspension. Late last year, they decided to resurface my street. All well and good, but they decided that it was best to do the work overnight. Three nights of the sound of tarmac being ripped up, of flashing orange lights, of trucks left permanently in reverse- and half the pricks were just standing around doing nothing.

The worst of the lot would have to be Orion Books- publishers of the Inspector Rebus series. They've waited until "Exit Music"- the last Rebus novel- to change the actual size of the paperback edition, so now I have the first 16 books in one size and the last one noticeably larger. They've also reissued all the earlier books in the larger size, obviously to tempt those as OCD as me to buy the whole lot again. Now that was a low blow.

IMO the problem is there is no education at all of riders or car drivers. I see bike riders run lights all the time (they killed a bloke down the road from my place), not use bike lanes, pull into other lanes with no indication, it goes on and on, yet the onus is put on the motorist to look out for them, pretty bloody hard when they behave erratically (motorists are also having to watch other cars). Govts have completely ballsed it up by putting no real effort in, as such no one really knows what the laws are, no one obeys there is no law enforcement going in. Oh another what shits me. Police, running ad after ad, telling us to slow down, don't drink, they shock us, they plead with us yet the greatest deterent of all is seeing police out on the road. They are hardly ever there, and maybe stop wasting money on ads on shit that everyone knows, spend some of it on areas like bikes and cars sharing the road and the rest on putting police in cars and on the roads.
