Good move.
The only way for this earth to have a future is for the human race to realise that through overpopulation we are raping earth to the point of destruction. The Chairman got it right. One child policy for all. 11 siblings? Now that selfish. |

Yep.
Still not enough one-child families. This should be a law, not a choice. |

BS, plenty of resources in the World., just not good govts, but rrellavant.
The article was about two self indulgent, greedy middle-class pigs who admit to having a token child - now that is 100% what is wrong with society. |

... and the longer they live, and the more they consume. e.g. Western Europe, Singapore, etc.
Edit: not that I'm against living longer, just saying that it also has knock on effects for population. In fact, just look at the overall average wealth from 1500-2000, and compare it to population changes in that time. Also- I'm not sure how far off sub-Saharan Africa is from wealth.

we can sustain continuous consumption
using Pareto's rule, the only popns worth worrying about are US,JP, western europe and BRIC - these countries will never run out of anything, 'cept govt handouts |

Surely then the implicit absence of wealth means the Africa and South America will continue their present population trends? What implications does that have
for the graph I posted above? Although I'm sure the Vatican will be delighted.
Regardless, below is a plot of per capita GDP. Changes in per capita GDP have occurred despite both Pareto and the population growth of the last century.
Now multiply the two graphs together, and explain how that can be sustained anywhere except for magic pudding land. |

"we can sustain continuous consumption"
tarz, this is not a personal attack, but that is probably the most ignorant post you have made. we cannot sustain continuous consumption by a long shot, and there is overwhelming evidence to indicate this. It's simply not reported in the mainstream because there are too many vested interests who have control over what gets published and what does not. either you've seen the kind of stuff i'm referring to and choose to regard it as bullshit, or haven't seen it at all. only you can tell me which. again, not a personal attack, as probably 98% of the western world feels the same way you do, but unless this thinking changes, and fast, we're heading for some fucked up times in the next 100 years. we may not see it in our lifetimes (although i think we will), but that doesn't mean it won't happen. |

no there isn't. Recycling and renewal will play a bigger part as time goes on. |

Tarz, I should be sticking my neck out here with you (nice to see you back, cli
I agree with you partially. ZPG - especially in the developed world - is not the answer. There's a world of difference between population growth in the developed world (and the implications) and population growth in the developing world (and those implications). Cli, do you have the population projections based on regions? That would be interesting. The resources we have are not infinite, but they are far more abundant than some would have us believe. It is the way they are used, managed and distributed that causes more problems than availability. Bio-fuels, oil for food, hijacked humanitarian aid spring to mind. |

We are running out of corn for eating - it's all being converted to ethanol. Brilliant idea that. Bio-fuel subsidies causing food riots in Haiti.

I'll add, though, another big drain on corn are the grain-fed beef and pork industries. Add to the list soon grain fed salmon. Although the Haitians have certainly brought some of their problems on themselves- environmental vandalism playing a part in societal collapse. |
