20 years ago if the Cops found out what the slugs did they would have copped the worst hiding of all time.
These days the fluffy system decrees that they must be outed through counselling. FFS going through the Catholic secondary school system and my mum's system of harsh discipline gave me basic respect of people. Also playing footy and cricket with hard hard arsed coaches meant you didn't dare disrespect your elders. Sure I fucked up like most people but at least I treated with basic respect. Bring back the strap and cane in the schools ! |

As a do-gooder, for the most part I tend to agree with decisions judges / juries make, given that they actually hear all the evidence and not just the report from the Herald-Sun... in a case like this, though, how they've escaped any sort of punishment... beggars belief.
Actually this letter from today's Age sums it up perfectly for me: Quote: |

that writer has just hit his late 20s, has a mortgage, balding head and a muffin top
Climagpie...you're kidding. They sure hear the evidence, but their penalties are rarely in line with the crime - this is the whole fucking point. Kids crippled for life by senseless violence, and the longest penalty is normally 2 years - a truly pathetic society...in fact very much third world. I will personally contribute 50K to any leader from any party, who is willing to push forward the penaltiesthey have in Singapore (and they do have soft ones too), minus the death penalty. |

cli I fully agree. Having small children gives you a different perspective. The time for the offender to "pay" one way or another should be proportional to the time the victim is affected. Also for adolescent offenders there has to be some responsibility on the parents. If you do this, a lot of parents would take "disciplining" there children seriously.
Sex offenders have a very low rehabilitation rate. Is it worth trying to rehabilitate a minority if you know that 75% will re-offend? |

I was talking about criminal law e.g. assault, rape, murder, vandalism
dissent comes under govt security legislation You don't want live in a society where your Wife amd kids have almost zero chance of been raped, and if they are, the offender is staring at least 10 years, but probably 20 years, down the barrel? Where you don't have to think twice about taking PT late at night? A place where if if someone cracks your friend or family member's head open during a fight, they don't get off without a penalty? ANd btw, we started at the same baseline as SG in terms of law - we have completely lost the plot since. neighbouring malaysia tries to have tough laws, but bc they constantly have religion muddling up intent, culture etc, it can get pretty ugly outside of kL |

I have no problem whatsoever with harsh penalties for rapists etc, particularly when rehabilitation is unlikely. And rehabilitation should be attempted behind bars, and eventual reintegration with strict control orders. This is why I am as pissed off as anyone re the "sentences" handed down to the DVD boys. However, with the other crimes mentioned; if you lock a 20-year old up for twenty years following a serious assault, you might as well lock them up forever. What prospect for any future contribution towards society is there? I guess you could ask how much were they contributing in the first place, but at the very least they probably had a job, were studying or whatever. And paying tax on the bourbon / beer they were drinking. My issue with Singapore is it appears to be a police state more interested in political crimes than real crime, that the principle of a fair trial appears missing (resulting in innocent people in jail), and that many crimes are ignored by the police (and by the statistics) on the basis that they are "civil disputes". And, of course, the death penalty. |

In today's MX there is an article that states that the Dad has backed the judge's decision to let her tormentors walk free.
Some of the Father's quotes include "the attackers deserve to avoid time behind bars", "We are happy with the sentence, we are not a vindictive family. All we ever wanted was a fair and just outcome and we feel that's what happened" "Overall the family, especially the daughter, were happy with the sentence, these boys have shown a level of remorse". Personally, I bet that the little f*ckers are right now bragging about how they got away with it. |

Re: Werribee DVD boys get off | #17 | ||
Quote: Why so? All the offenders are minors so they are anonymous and their records will be expunged when they turn 18. Remember the perpetrators were selling a DVD of their acts, that implies to me that they were proud of what they did rather than that they are haunted or racked with guilt. Quote: I didn't make comment on how just the respective sentences were or that I wanted an 'eye for an eye'. I just stated my belief that I find it hard to accept that the boys were remorseful over what they have done. I cannot see how you can be proud of it (as demonstrated by selling the DVD and the comments made on Myspace) but full of remorse at trial. The cynic in me feels that they are remorseful at getting caught or being stupid enough to film and sell it. |

Its not as if they have had an identity change, still the same people, blah blah blah. Mark my words their little pea-hearts will be breathing a little faster in their immediate futures. |
