Posts: 1846 14-Oct-2008 15:16:10	Tags : None Plays against me for Southport and played with many of my teamates in the U18 QLD side this year. Has been saying for a while that the Pies have promised to take him with their first pick. He opted to not take the Gold Coast package (3yr deal, 80k a year) but enter the draft on Collingwoods "promise". Will be interesting to see if there's any truth to it. FWIW I think he can play a bit. Has good pace and nice skills. Good height for a midfielder but needs to put plenty of kgs on still. We could do worse...

Posts: 1847 15-Oct-2008 11:20:26	He's a quick outside midfielder with good skills. Can also pinch hit as a HF. Was still a fair way off being a dominant player this year but he is only young. Just needs extra kgs and better endurance. He has most of the tools already.

Posts: 1865 19-Jan-2009 14:37:06	Apparently just dominated in the first intra club practice match. 17 touches and a goal from 40 minutes of play. Very impressive! Ben Reid also sounds like he did well with 15 disposals as CHB.

Posts: 1630 19-Jan-2009 15:11:55	The most exciting thing re Beames was Wood constantly hit the ball to him from the ruck contests!!!! I reckon Wood could have a big year. Has all the attribures IMO, just needs a lot of game time and an improved fitness base.

Imagine having a ruckman actually winning the tap outs and hitting to the advantage of your midfielders. Extremely important for our future prospects that Wood is given as much game time in the ruck this season.

Many Coaches put kids or project players into the seniors to get experience at that level. How many times have you heard coaches say "We just have to get games into them"?

Posts: 1632 20-Jan-2009 14:51:02	Correct Murray and with big guys it is even more important. They take time but playing in the VFL is not going to bring it on. You always hear coaches say players need at least 50 games in them before they become consistent and that when you have a core between 100 to 150 games you should be in good position to go for a flag.

Posts: 1866 20-Jan-2009 16:17:49	Wood has played 30 now so should be ready for that next step without being thrown to the wolves. He should definitely get a crack at being #1 ruck in the NAB cup, altough I did just read an article on Bear who thinks he has the ruck division covered

I reckon good ruckman are good ruckman pretty much after one season. My last image of Wood is someone spilling marks and being thrown around like a large sized elmo doll.

Posts: 831 21-Jan-2009 14:13:17	Dean Cox was a dud at the start. Was a third string ruckman. Gardiner went down and got more oportunity and now he best ruckman in the comp by an absolute mile. I think Wood is probably more advanced than what Cox was at his age. Not to say he will be a better player. Has a lot of upside.

Posts: 559 22-Jan-2009 15:40:37	Troy Simmonds was rubbish for about 4 years, changed clubs like changing weather. - Now he is a pretty good ruckman Sandilands was all arms and legs for about the same amount of time, now one of the better rucks in the league. And Peter Moore was a Full Forward for his first few years until he got game experience. Its not a new thing, some big guys just take time Wood needs many more games of senior experience

Posts: 136 22-Jan-2009 19:50:26	cox was a massive spud back in the day. but when he (it) clicked it - bang. i like wood, no pun. competes over head and breaks even in the ruck. hopefully he developes into a 15p 25ho player for us. needs to be our #1 by seasons end for us to be any sniff at all. just on cox, a tad overated - given a choice i'd go sandilands. love the way he goes about it. first hands everytime.
