Amazing! I spoke to a coach at NN (now doing 'something else' in football) and he said pretty much the opposite about Brayden. Said he "was a great kid and a natural leader, but really hadn't DONE much at TAC." and was no guarantee to even make it at afl, yet alone star. ( It was just assumed he'd be good, and that CFC got a bargain using F/S pick. ) ...and I'm close to a bloke who said Heater would be better than Ryce.. even before he'd played a game of any sort with us. |

An insight from another club about Sidebottom ....
Spoke to a couple close Bomber sources tonight and the Dons would have taken Sidebottom at pick 5 if not for their need for a key position player to replace Fletcher. Matthew Knights said of Sidebottom "He has Bartel written all over him". Happy Days !!! |

I am really exited about the kids from this draft. Essendon were seriously contemplating Sidebottom at 5. But decided to go for the obviously more important KPP in Hurley. Had Sidebottom not been available we would have gone for Beams at 11. Hine had to be told to relax when both were available. So basically in such a super draft considering the players that we got who Hine rated we didn't need to tank in 08. |

They are kids, let them develop. Some will come on ready made only to peter out in a few years. Others will take time and become good to very good players
after looking ordinary at first.
To label any kid who has not pulled on a boot in the AFL a 'star' is as dumb as labelling them a dud at the same stage. Just give them time to develop without unreasonable expectations. |

If Collingwood had the #1 pick in the draft tjhis year and I was the recruiting officer - I would have been calling out Jack Ziebell as the #1 pick.
I rate him better than Rich who I consider the second best middie in the draft and I rate both ahead of Steele Sidebottom who I consider a jack of all trades and master of none. Sidebottom will be a very good player for us - but I doubt that he will be an A grade midfielder and I doubt that he will regularly kick bags as a forward. Ziebell on the otherhand I see as a guy you could build a midfield around. The midfield general who you channel the play through. Just my uninformed 2 bobs worth. The Dude |

Dude, Sidebottom could easily be an A grader. Knights says that he has 'Jimmy Bartel' written all over him. Jimmy Bartel! Wathing his highlights on
youtube I have to say I agree.

The team, missing Anthony Rocca and Kevin Dyas who worked on core exercises in the gym, trained for over two hours learning and implementing new practice drills. Former Magpie Toby Thoolen, Bryce Carrol (Western Jets) and Michael Gugliotta (Northern Territory) all received permission to train with the team for Wednesday's session. The new drills were overseen by assistant coaches Paul Hudson and Mark Neeld and focused on short 15 meter passes, handballing under pressure and picking up the ball on the run. The "gauntlet" comprised of an offensive team of three working the ball by hand through the defensive team. The drill was conducted over 25 metres working the ball down the line. Dayne Beams looked very comfortable handling the ball through limited space to teammate Brad Dick. The players then separated into four groups and worked on picking the ball up in a single clean motion. Dale Thomas, Leon Davis and Alan Didak were standouts in this drill with a special mention to Steele Sidebottom who worked through the drill without an error. The training session concluded with the team separating into various groups to work on specific drills. Head coach Michael Malthouse worked with Ben Reid, Cameron Wood, Dale Thomas and Leigh Brown in perfecting the art of taking a 'speccy'. Malthouse then worked one-on-one with Harry O'Brien in the defensive 50. O'Brien was running towards the goals and marking with his back to the centre square. He would then run around the goal post and deliver a 50 meter pass to Malthouse to simulate kick-in situations. Sidebottom worked with the ruck group (Reid, Wood, Josh Fraser and Chris Bryan) on stoppage play. Sidebottom excelled at gathering the ball from a tap out with a defender holding him. The team will train next week before taking two weeks off for the Christmas holiday. |

The more I read about Beams, the more excited I get.
This could be an inspired selection by Hine. Looks to have an adult body too, could go straight into the middle and not get crunched |

I would rather a pure footballer. Nothings faster than ball speed. Some of the best assets a midfielder can have is an outstanding ability to read the play and have great disposal. This guy is Aplus amongst his junior peers in both category's. I am very exited at watching iron cheeks play in 09. |

I think jhe was talking in a CFC context Muzza.
What I have seen on the YouTube hilights of Beams, he certainly has good hands in close to the contest. I haven't seen enough of him to get excited either way, though Colin Wisbey's assessment of Bams was less than glowing in that Beams is more the predator type rather than the get his own ball type of middie.
